Announcement from the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center
Topic: Rumors regarding MBMC relocate to a new location.
On May 22, 2009, a group of individuals approached Phramaha Thanaphat ,the President of MBMC with a proposition to relocate the MBMC Temple to a new location in Macomb County and proposed name change of the temple as well. The proposed location is an old Christian church; the cost for this new location would be $400,000: the entire amount ($400,000) would need to financed with a loan.
Phramaha Thanaphat told this group that he cannot make a decision on his own to move the temple, because the MBMC Temple has a board members that he needs to consult with for a majority vote.
On May 24, 2009, the topic of moving the temple came to the board for a vote; the board voted unanimously against moving the temple.
On July 12, 2009, Dr.Pharamaha Tanat , secretary of the Council of Thai Bhikkus in U.S.A. and Phrakue Soponsardvides, board member of the Council of Thai Bhikkus in U.S.A. met with our songka and MBMC board members to discuss the temple move. Dr. Tanat suggested that no move take place with reasons that the cost/ expense will be much more. Dr. Tanat’s reasons for not moving were that the economy is in a downturn and the debt of $400,000 will be much more burden for the community. Conversely, the MBMC board members agree to Dr. Tanat statement.
The current temple has three spacious properties, and much work to do for it to become the vision of the community and the late Dr. Chuen. We need our members to help develop this temple, and make it flourish. This current temple is better than moving to a new location since our current debt is much smaller, and in a short time our debt for the properties will be paid off.
It is important we minimize debt, and pay off our old debt as soon as possible since, it will allow MBMC to provide future resources to the community. Moving to this proposed location will put the community into debt for over thirty years to pay off the structure.
The board agrees to keep the temple at its current location with the same name, to honor the late Dr. Chuen Phangcham, the founder of the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center. The temple is a late Dr. Chuen’s vision; to continue with his vision for the community, we will need the community’s support with the temple current expansion project. The temple expansion will give us an additional of 2000 Sq. feet, making more space for meditation and ceremonies.
The MBMC boards member aggrees that we will continue to honor the memory of the late Dr. Chuen Phangcham and his vision, and that the temple exists to serve all the Buddhist community.
